Sawan month

The holy month of Sawan (Shravan) in 2025 is expected to be deeply significant for devotees of Lord Shiva across India and beyond. Known as a spiritually charged time in the Hindu calendar, Sawan is not just about tradition—it’s a month believed to open the doors of divine grace through fasting, rituals, and dedicated prayers.

Whether you follow the Purnimanta calendar in North India, the Amanta calendar in South and Western India, or the solar system observed in Nepal and Himalayan regions, the timing and rituals of Sawan hold great meaning and benefits. Here’s everything you need to know to observe this sacred month correctly and powerfully.

What is Sawan and Why is it Considered Sacred?

Sawan (also called Shravan) is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar and is entirely dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer in the Holy Trinity. Mythologically, it is believed that during Sawan, Lord Shiva drank the poison (halahala) that emerged during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), saving the universe from destruction.

This act of sacrifice makes this month incredibly important for Shiva devotees, who repay their devotion through Sawan Somwar Vrats (Monday fasts), visiting Shiva temples, and performing Abhishekams with milk, honey, and Bilva leaves.

What Makes Sawan Somwar Vrat So Powerful?

The Sawan Somwar Vrat is a sacred vow observed on each Monday of the Shravan month. Devotees fast from sunrise to sunset, offering milk, curd, honey, sugar, and water to the Shivling. These offerings symbolize purity and surrender.

It is widely believed that those who observe this fast with faith are granted wishes, marital bliss, and spiritual elevation. Many unmarried women also observe it to seek an ideal life partner, while others do it for health, peace, and prosperity.

Another significant practice is the Solah Somwar Vrat (Sixteen Mondays Fast), which some begin in the month of Sawan and continue beyond.

Other Festivals and Rituals During Sawan

Sawan is not limited to Mondays. Here are some other important observances:

Sawan Shivratri: Celebrated just before the Amavasya (new moon), this is one of the most powerful nights for worshipping Lord Shiva.

Mangal Gauri Vrat: Observed by married women on Tuesdays during Sawan for family happiness and marital harmony.

Hariyali Amavasya: A day for tree plantation and worshipping nature, often linked with blessings from ancestors.

Kanwar Yatra: A large-scale pilgrimage by Kanwariyas who carry holy Ganga water to offer at Shiva temples.
