The newly launched Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express, a symbol of modern rail connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, has seen unprecedented demand since it began operations. As of July 2025, all seats are booked for the entire month, and no confirmed tickets are available before August 7, according to railway sources and booking data on the IRCTC app.
With the surge in passengers linked to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra 2025, Indian Railways is now actively considering adding extra coaches to meet the overwhelming demand. This development marks a significant milestone in Kashmir’s integration into India’s high-speed rail network and demonstrates how modern infrastructure is transforming travel in the region.
A New Era of Rail Travel in Kashmir
The Vande Bharat Express, India’s semi-high-speed train, began its Srinagar-Katra route through the newly completed Chenab Railway Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, soaring 359 meters above the river bed. This engineering marvel has not only connected the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India more efficiently but has also opened new possibilities for tourism, business, and religious travel.
Covering 200 kilometers in just three hours, the train offers a time saving of nearly three hours compared to traditional train services. The train runs four round trips daily, providing convenience, comfort, and safety to passengers.

Fully Booked: What’s Causing the Massive Demand?
Several factors have contributed to the current rush:
- Amarnath Yatra 2025
The Amarnath Yatra, which began on July 3 and will continue till August 9, is a major annual pilgrimage that draws lakhs of devotees from across the country. Given the strict security protocols and frequent restrictions on National Highway 44 (Srinagar–Jammu Road) during the yatra period, many pilgrims are opting for the Vande Bharat train to avoid delays and ensure safety.
- Tourist Boom in Kashmir
The summer season is peak tourism time in the Kashmir Valley, with people flocking to destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and Dal Lake in Srinagar. With airfares rising sharply during the holiday season, many budget-conscious travelers are turning to Vande Bharat trains as a cost-effective and comfortable alternative.
- Strategic Connectivity
The Vande Bharat between Katra and Srinagar not only improves domestic travel but also plays a strategic role in national integration and border-state development. The enhanced accessibility supports military logistics, healthcare services, and faster movement of goods in remote regions.
Indian Railways Responds: Plans to Add Coaches
According to Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of Jammu Railway Division, the demand has surpassed initial projections. He stated:
“We are witnessing very high demand for the Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat service. We have requested approval from higher authorities to increase the number of coaches. Once approved, this will ease the current seat shortage and help accommodate more passengers.”
The existing configuration of the train comprises eight coaches, with a mix of AC Chair Cars (CC) and Executive Chair Cars (EC). Adding two to four more coaches, particularly in the CC category, could significantly improve seat availability.
Frustrated travelers, including pilgrims and tourists, have taken to social media and feedback platforms to express concern over the lack of available seats. Some have suggested the need for a second Vande Bharat service or special trains during the Amarnath Yatra season.
Comfort and Features of the Srinagar Vande Bharat Express
Passengers are drawn to the Vande Bharat not just for its speed, but also for its modern amenities:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches with large windows
- On-board WiFi and infotainment systems
- GPS-based passenger information systems
- Bio-vacuum toilets and touch-free amenities
- CCTV surveillance and fire detection systems for safety
These features make the train comparable to air travel in terms of comfort, with the added benefit of scenic views of the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal ranges, and lush Kashmir countryside.
Economic and Regional Impact
- The popularity of the Vande Bharat Express has also given a boost to the local economy:
- Increased tourist inflow means higher earnings for hotels, taxi operators, guides, and local artisans.
- Faster trade and logistics between Jammu and Kashmir, reducing dependency on roadways.
- Improved access to healthcare and education for remote communities in the region.
- Job creation in railway stations, catering services, and maintenance depots.
A New Milestone in Kashmir’s Transport History
The Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is more than just a train; it represents a transformational shift in regional connectivity, economic development, and national unity. The current overbooking is a testament to its success and popularity.
While Indian Railways’ move to add extra coaches will ease pressure in the short term, long-term planning may include more frequent services, special seasonal trains, or an additional Vande Bharat rake dedicated to the Jammu–Kashmir sector.
For now, travelers are strongly advised to book well in advance, especially during festival seasons, pilgrimage months, and tourist peaks. As India continues to modernize its railways, the Srinagar Vande Bharat stands out as a shining example of progress, integration, and accessibility.
